How Ortho-K Works: Reshaping the Cornea While You Sleep

Orthokeratology, commonly called Ortho-K, offers a different approach to vision correction. What Happens to the Cornea During Ortho-K?

The cornea is the clear, curved surface at the front of the eye. Its shape plays an important role in how light focuses on the retina. With myopia, or nearsightedness, light focuses in front of the retina rather than directly on it, causing distant objects to appear blurry.

Custom Ortho-K lenses apply carefully controlled forces to the tear layer and corneal surface while you sleep. This temporarily changes the distribution of cells in the outermost corneal layer, creating a new corneal shape that helps light focus more accurately.

The process does not permanently change the eye. When Ortho-K lenses are discontinued, the cornea gradually returns toward its original shape.

What Is It Like to Wear Ortho-K Lenses?

Ortho-K lenses are inserted before bedtime and removed after waking. Because the eyes are closed while sleeping, many patients find nighttime lens wear easier to incorporate into their routine than wearing contacts throughout the day.
